In the early 90's major changes occurred. The war in former Yugoslavia, the secession of the ex-republics, international community sanctions on Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and all the circumstances that accompanied these major events, stopped the JAT development, and led to the interruption of international flights for two and a half years and the grounding of almost the entire company fleet. Between June 1992 and October 1994, JAT had only domestic flights. JAT overriding objective is to satisfy its passengers. The same is attained by raising the standard of services so as to comply with the highest international standards and state of art achievements. According to the fleet renewal program JAT has already reached a decision to buy 8 latest generation aircraft for medium-haul traffic, and following the Market demand, to take on lease 1 or 2 aircraft for inter-continental flights.

Ex-Yugoslavia had a territory of 255.000 sq. kilometres, and the new Yugoslavia was reduced to 102.000 sq. kilometres. The former federation had 22 million inhabitants and now Yugoslavia has less than 11 million. JAT previously had 19 domestic destinations and now it flies to only 5 cities. The renewal of JAT international flights under the new colors of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and a new company visual identity started on October 6, 1994 with the Belgrade – Moscow flight. Resources have been preserved thanks primarily to the enormous experience of its personnel. JAT has managed to return to all its previous markets in Europe. And in less than two years!
