Baggage allowance - Points to remember

  • On JAT Airways flights the baggage allowance is 30 kg either in economy or business class. In addition 10 kg is allowed per infant accompanied by an adult.

Restrictions to weight of checked baggage to comply with Health & Safety Guidelines

From 1st June 2004, any single piece of checked baggage weighing more than 32kg (7Olbs) will not be accepted at check-in by any airline operating from Heathrow Airport. BAA is introducing the limit at Heathrow Airport, after consultation with airlines, handling companies and unions to help reduce manual handling injuries amongst airport staff. The 32kg limit per bag still constitutes a heavy bag, but with correct handling, should help to minimize the risk of strains and injuries.

    Please also note:

    • From 1St June 2004 all bags over 23kg will be required to be tagged as a ‘heavy’ bag with the actual bag weight clearly shown
    on the tag.

    • Weighing scales will be provided in terminals for passengers to check the weight of their bags. Any bag exceeding the 32kg limit must be repacked, unless prior arrangements have been made for the handling of specialised baggage e.g. film crew camera equipment etc.

    • Interim arrangements are being developed to assist passengers required to repack overweight bags. This will include a repacking area identified within each terminal and the provision of boxes and labels etc.

    • Check-in staff will be strongly urged to make sure weight limits for individual bags are strictly enforced.

    • After a settling in period, check in belts will be reconfigured to prevent any bag over 32kg being sent into the baggage system.

    • Airport staff should be advised to use the correct processes, when handling transfer and arriving bags, as we are not in a position to control the weight of inbound bags.
